Mrs. Lord's Language Arts Class
Curriculum Students will move forward to become more skilled in literacy practices and thinking. We will continue to use the Fundations phonics program to develop phonemic awareness and decoding skills. Children will explore different literature genres throughout the year as well as strengthen their comprehension skills. In oral and written language, students will progress from using simple sentences to using more complex sentences incorporating correct grammatical conventions. Whole and small group instruction, centers, and technology will be used in the classroom. As the year continues, they will develop their ability to express themselves in the world in which they live.

What We Are Doing in Reading Class
In second grade our reading block is structured so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These tasks are comprehension, accuracy, fluency and vocabulary. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. You will notice a decrease in the number of worksheets your child brings home. Students will be assessed quarterly to determine growth.
For phonics instruction, we use the Fundations program by Wilson and will work with blends, digraphs, glued sounds, suffixes, vowels, vowel teams, and syllable types. What You Should Be Doing at Home
We will have homework Monday through Thursday. Homework consists of reading nightly for about 15 minutes and completing worksheets or projects. Fundations assignments need parental assistance. When your child or you read aloud at home, parents could help with comprehension by asking questions about the selection.
-Please continue finding books on your child's independent reading level to read at home. |
