What We Are Doing in Math
|
Curriculum Description
We continue to develop strong number sense and effective problem solving skills to ensure a strong foundation for their growing math skills. Students will work, independently, in pairs, and in groups, using center-based learning and technology. Students use a variety of concrete, pictorial, and symbolic models. Second graders will develop fluency with efficient procedures including standard algorithms for adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division as they delve into the exploration and utilization of procedures to solve problems.
By the end of second grade, students should know from memory all the sums of two one-digit numbers and the correlating subtraction facts. Parents are asked to partner with us in helping their child achieve this goal by offering their child opportunities to show what they have learned. If you would like games or ideas to help with this please let us know. |
Throughout the year we will be working on fluency with addition and subtraction facts. Other topics we cover are based on knowledge of these facts. The curriculum consists of two and three digit addition and subtraction problems, big numbers, story problems, place value, counting, fractions, measurement, geometry, graphing, multiplication and division. A few of the ways we will practice math facts are using games, computer programs, quizzes, manipulatives and study buddies.
-We change classes for our math groups. The groups are flexible. All students are expected to demonstrate 'on grade' skills by the end of the year. Assessments and benchmark work will carry the following symbols to communicate how a student is performing: E=exceeding, M=mastering,D=developing, N/I=Not introduced |
What Students Should be Doing at Home
To reinforce skills learned in class, there will be homework nightly, Monday through Thursday. Always practice addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts whenever possible to increase number memory and fluency. Parents could make up story problems using real-life situations to promote problem solving skills.
-Please practice math subtraction facts for quick recall and memorization.
-Students should memorize the multiplication tables for the ones, twos, fives, and tens. We have added the threes and the fours multiplication tables as well.
